A native of Bakersfield, California, Josh Barnett began his enthusiasm for decorating with Christmas lights in 1991, at the age of nine. He started with just a few strands of lights on the bushes at his Nana’s home; seeing how much that made her happy, the following year he determined to outdo himself. Over the years not only did he use many more lights, but also began constructing other elements and wooden characters, including a 12 foot tall castle, and adding special effects ... such as a display placing Mr. and Mrs. Claus in front of a fireplace, with a fog machine giving the effect of smoke billowing out from the chimney.
Josh expanded his knowledge of lighting techniques and products through investigative research and with the help of some very nice people he met over the years. By 1998 the holiday displays began receiving media attention. Josh strove every year to not only increase the size of his display, but also to vary the theme so that viewers would come back year after year to be surprised and never know what to expect.
By the time Josh did the final display at his own home in 2001, the show was known as Lightasmic! and used a grand total of 185,000 lights controlled by computer to produce a 10-minute show synchronized to holiday music. Everything from the roof to the sides of the house to the yard and driveway was covered in lights. Two 20 foot tall trees made out of lights would "spin" and change colors. The display brought great joy to everyone, as witnessed by the number of people who signed his guest book that year, and Josh was awarded a Beautiful Bakersfield Award for his efforts.
By 2002 Josh had started Lightasmic! as a company, and moved his light show to the parking lot of Stier's RV, through the generosity of owner and founder Mike Stier. The show consisted of 500,000 lights, animatronics, fog machines, and 100 strobe lights controlled by a computer to dance to the music. Snow machines provided a "snow zone" in the California desert.
Josh was highlighted nationally on “America’s Greatest Christmas Decorations” on NBC, which aired December 22, 2002. On January 2, 2003, Josh was awarded the KERO 23 Leadership Award by ABC affiliate KERO 23.
Since officially founding Lightasmic! as a company in 2002, Josh enjoys creating and designing experiences that entertain millions across the country.
